SKT is building a global cooperation system to advance its 5G core.

SKT announced on the 9th that it has established a global cooperation framework with Ericsson-LG, Dell Technologies, and AMD to 'advance 5G core systems.'

5G Core refers to the 'switch' among the three major elements that make up a network: 'base station', 'transmission network', and 'switch'.

SKT and the other four companies plan to advance their 5G core networks by focusing on the introduction of new servers from Dell Technologies, aiming to reduce 5G core power consumption by up to 30%, extend the server supply period for stable network operation, and advance network operation technology based on cloud technology.

First, SKT is introducing the low-power, high-efficiency 'Dell PowerEdge R7615 Server'. The introduction of this server is the first instance of applying an x86 server based on AMD 4th generation EPYC processors to a 5G network.

Ericsson-LG verifies the early adoption of 5G core equipment for Dell PowerEdge servers.

Dell Technologies and AMD plan to support development compatibility between Dell PowerEdge servers and communications software, and pursue NEBS (Network Equipment-Building System) standard certification, which is a standard for communications equipment conformity for servers.

Lee Jong-hoon, Vice President and Head of Infrastructure Engineering at SKT, stated, “We will be able to create stable and efficient 5G network services through global cooperation among the four companies,” adding, “We will continue to advance our network systems while simultaneously pursuing mutual cooperation with various domestic and international players.”

Jo In-sook, Senior Vice President of Cloud Software and Services at Ericsson LG, stated, “Ericsson LG will actively support the advancement of SKT’s network based on cloud 5G core solutions that support a diverse server lineup.”

Andrew Vaz, Vice President of Dell Technologies’ TSB (Telecom Systems Business Unit), said, “SKT will be able to provide advanced 5G network services by collaborating with various leading companies, including Dell, centered on open hardware infrastructure.”

Alexey Navolokin, AMD Asia Pacific Commercial Sales Director, said, “We are pleased to partner with SKT on a leading initiative to equip 5G core networks with x86 server processors.” AMD explained, “We provide superior energy efficiency and balanced performance compared to competing products in the same space and infrastructure.”
