The three telecommunications companies and KCTV Jeju Broadcasting have strengthened the telecommunications infrastructure of Udo, which is visited by 150,000 people per month, through undersea fiber optic cables.

SK Telecom (CEO Yoo Young-sang) announced on the 7th that it has completed the construction of an undersea fiber optic cable over a 3.23-kilometer section between Jeju Island and Udo Island by forming a consortium with KT, LGU+, and KCTV Jeju Broadcasting.

The three existing telecommunications companies and KCTV Jeju Broadcasting provided communication and broadcasting services to Udo via microwave communication; however, as the number of tourists visiting Udo continued to increase, it was necessary to expand infrastructure to meet the growing demand for communication.

Accordingly, the four companies—SKT, KT, LGU+, and KCTV Jeju Broadcasting—signed a consortium agreement in September 2020 and proceeded with marine surveys, safety inspections, consultations on sea area use, permits for the occupation and use of public waters, and communication with local residents for the installation of submarine cables, and completed the construction of submarine optical cables in December 2023.

SKT expects that through the completion of this fiber optic cable, it will be able to meet Udo's communication needs by expanding the capacity of 5G and LTE services provided to Udo and establishing a foundation for ultra-high-speed internet services.

Lee Jong-hoon, Vice President of Infrastructure Engineering at SKT, stated, “The expansion of service capacity and improvement in communication quality through the completion of this submarine optical cable will make the lives of Udo residents and tourists much more convenient,” adding that “in the marine and island regions. "We will create new social value by continuously improving communication quality," they stated.
