Efforts to combat climate change: All factories aim to become carbon neutral within 15 years.

Schneider Electric announced 10 commitments to practice sustainable management in preparation for the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21). The 10 pledges were developed in line with the direction of the Planet & Society Barometer , a sustainable development evaluation index that Schneider Electric has established and implemented since 2005, and are also in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in September of this year.

Schneider Electric has established a goal of achieving carbon neutrality across all its plants and operations within the next 15 years through 10 sustainability management commitments and of building a consistent industrial ecosystem by encouraging the participation of suppliers and customers.

To achieve this, the plan is to support partner companies in reducing energy consumption by up to 30% by introducing proactive energy efficiency solutions, while also providing clean and safe electricity to low-income families and helping to alleviate fuel poverty.

Schneider Electric has a business structure that improves energy efficiency, reduces energy waste, and enhances the quality of life for people. In other words, as the business grows, the sustainability of the planet increases.


In recognition of these achievements, the company was recently selected for the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)'s Climate Change A-list for the fifth consecutive year, and also joined the Climate Pledge of 39 French companies to contribute to the successful hosting of COP21 and the goal of limiting the increase in the global average temperature to 2 degrees Celsius. It was also named one of the 'Most Sustainable Global Companies (2015, 9th)' by Corporate Knights and one of the 'Top 10 Greenest Companies in the World (2014)' by Newsweek.

Schneider Electric Chairman and CEO Jean-Pascal Tricoire stated, “Schneider Electric’s role is to enable Life Is On, for everyone, everywhere. Sustainability is at the core of our strategy, and we believe that a better climate environment will lead to a better economy.” He also stated, “Tackling climate change and economic development are inseparable issues,” explaining the purpose of the ten pledges.

The 10 commitments announced for COP21 will apply not only to Schneider Electric's products and solutions, but also to its R&D and supply chain sectors. Details are as follows.

1. Measure and quantify the CO2 impact of all future large-scale customer projects.
2. 100% of new products are designed according to Schneider Electric's ecoDesign Way™, and 75% of product sales are realized through Green Premium ™ products.
3. Preventing 120,000 tons of carbon emissions by recycling products at the end of their useful life through our “end-of-life” service.
4. Provide electricity to 50 million low-income households within 10 years using low-carbon solutions.
5. We are pursuing projects related to energy storage devices to develop new and renewable energy and mini-grids.
6. Find an alternative to the SF6 gas problem within 5 years and eliminate the use of SF6 gas in Schneider Electric products within 10 years.
7. Reduce Schneider Electric's energy intensity by 3.5% annually.
8. Reduce CO2 emissions from transportation within Schneider Electric by 3.5% annually.
9. Invest 10 billion euros in R&D for sustainable innovation over the next 10 years.
10. Issue climate bonds to finance low-carbon technology R&D.
