Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-kwak) announced the release of two RS485 transceivers (product names: LTC2876 and LTC2877) that are robust and withstand high voltage, suitable for PROFIBUS-DP (decentralized periphery) master and slave devices.

Similar to fieldbuses, PROFIBUS DP systems are susceptible to installation cross-wiring errors, ground voltage errors, or surges, which can cause large fluctuation overvoltage conditions exceeding the maximum absolute ratings of typical transceivers. Regardless of whether in transmit, receive, standby, or off-power states, the LTC2876 and LTC2877 can withstand ±60V on their bus pins, eliminating common damage caused by transmission line errors.

The LTC2876 and LTC2877 provide various protection levels suitable for a wide range of PROFIBUS DP applications, including individual manufacturing and process automation. The extended ±25V input common-mode range and full failsafe operation improve data communication reliability in the event of electrical noise environments and ground loop voltages that can cause data errors and potential device damage.

With remarkably superior ESD protection, the LTC2876 and LTC2877 can withstand ±52kV HBM at the transceiver pins without latch-up or damage. All other pins are protected to ±15kV HBM. The fully symmetric receiver threshold ensures that the device maintains excellent duty cycle symmetry and improves receiver noise immunity when at low signal levels, while supporting full fail-safe operation. Both devices are tested with PROFIBUS IEC 61158-2 and TIA/EIA-485-A (RS485) loads and guarantee compatibility with both standards.

The LTC2876 and LTC2877 are available in commercial, industrial, and automotive versions, supporting operating temperature ranges of 0°C to 70°C, –40°C to 85°C, and –40°C to 125°C, respectively. The LTC2876 is available in a RoHS-compliant 8-pin 3mm x 3mm DFN or MSOP package, while the LTC2877 is available in a RoHS-compliant 10-pin 3mm x 3mm DFN or MSOP package including logic power.
