IHS Adopts Infineon Chips in More Than Half of Automotive 77GHz Radars
Shipped 20 million radar chips over the past few years

It is expected that chips from Infineon Technologies (Korea CEO Lee Seung-soo) will be adopted in more than half of the 77GHz automotive radar systems produced in 2016. Statistically speaking, this means that one out of every 15 new cars will be equipped with a driver assistance system featuring Infineon's 77GHz radar chip.

According to market research firm IHS, Infineon is the world leader in the rapidly growing market for radar chips for driver assistance systems. Infineon has shipped 20 million radar chips over the past few years and plans to ship 30 million chips for driver assistance systems in the coming year alone. This would mean Infineon's radar chip revenue doubling every year over the next five years.



Ralf Bornefeld, Vice President and Head of Infineon Technologies’ Sensors and Control business unit, stated, “Four of the world’s top five radar system manufacturers are already using Infineon’s 77GHz radar chips. Driving safety is becoming commonplace, even in mid-range and compact cars.” "Using Infineon's sensor chips can form a kind of safety shield around the vehicle, and doing so is essential for autonomous driving," he said.

Depending on the price range or model, one to three radar systems are installed. It is expected that up to five will be included in the near future, and since these systems combine to provide a 360-degree all-around view function, they enable new features such as intersection assistance and parking assistance.

Furthermore, the automotive industry anticipates that autonomous vehicles will be commercialized around 2020, and these vehicles will be equipped with at least 10 radar systems. In addition, cameras, lasers, and ultrasonic systems will join in, with all these devices forming a safety shield around the vehicle. This will be the core technology for autonomous driving.
