Dr. Kim Hyung-soo of KT Appointed Chair of 5G Standardization Dedicated Group
Published2017.02.20 17:15The ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Standardization Bureau has established the 'IMT-2020 Working Party', a dedicated group for 5G standardization, with Dr. Kim Hyung-soo of KT appointed as its chair.
The establishment of this 'IMT-2020 Working Party' was finalized at the regular plenary meeting of ITU-T Study Group 13, held in Geneva, Switzerland from the 6th to the 17th. The decision was made in accordance with Resolution 92, which was adopted at the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly held in Tunisia last year, calling for strengthened 5G standardization activities.
The group is a regular organization that will operate for the next four years, with Dr. Kim Hyung-soo of KT and Luca Pesando of Telecom Italia appointed as co-chairs to oversee ITU-T's 5G technical standardization.
The 'IMT-2020 Working Party' will establish a total of five sub-study groups under its purview to oversee the standardization of core 5G-related technologies. The five sub-study groups are divided as follows: Study Group 6 on Quality of Service (Q.6), Study Group 20 on Network Architecture and Requirements (Q.20), Study Group 21 on Network Virtualization and Orchestration (Q.21), Study Group 22 on Next-Generation Network Architecture (Q.22), and Study Group 23 on Fixed-Mobile Convergence (Q.23), each responsible for 5G technical standardization.
Meanwhile, in preparation for this regular plenary meeting, the Korean ITU Committee under the National Radio Research Agency organized a Korean delegation headed by Dr. Kim Hyung-soo of KT, with participation also from ETRI, KAIST, and others, totaling approximately 20 participants from Korean industry, academia, and research institutions. Based on this, Korea secured leadership positions for 6 out of the 13 study groups of Study Group 13, accounting for nearly 50% of the total.
Kim Hyung-soo, Chair of the ITU-T 'IMT-2020' Working Party, stated, "This recognition reflects Korea's contribution to the early standardization of 5G core technologies," and added, "As I oversee ITU-T's 5G technical standardization, I will make efforts to ensure that Korea's representative standards are adopted as international standards."

KT and ETRI succeed in developing NB-IoT terminal technology

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
