SK Telecom Recognized for Next-Generation Network Technology Competitiveness
Published2017.05.24 17:22SK Telecom (CEO Park Jung-ho) announced on the 23rd (local time) that it received a total of three awards at two global telecommunications and IT awards held in London, England.
The company won the Infrastructure Innovation Awards at the 'GTB Awards' for 'World's First 5G Handover Technology' and 'LTE Base Station Interference and Power Saving Technology'.
The 'GTB (Global Telecoms Business) Awards' are awards presented by GTB Magazine, a British telecommunications/IT magazine, since 2007 to companies that have achieved innovative results in five fields, including telecommunications infrastructure, corporate services, and customer services, over the course of a year.
The 'world's first 5G handover technology' that SK Telecom won together with Samsung Electronics is a key technology for stably providing high-quality 5G services even when moving. The two companies succeeded in developing this technology for the first time in the world in September last year and also successfully verified it in actual communication environments such as urban areas.
The 'LTE Base Station Interference and Power Saving Technology (Green Scheduler with Lean Carrier)' that SK Telecom and Ericsson won together on this day is a technology that can simultaneously increase the communication speed used by customers and reduce base station power. This technology is expected to become a key technology for the future evolution of eco-friendly networks.
Meanwhile, SK Telecom won the 'Innovative Small Cell Architecture' category for 'Unlicensed Band Frequency Aggregation and Open Base Station Technology' at the 'Small Cell Industry Awards' held in London, England on the same day.
SK Telecom was evaluated as leading the evolution into the 4.5G network era in the small cell sector with its ‘unlicensed band frequency aggregation technology’ and ‘open base station technology’ that combines LTE and Wi-Fi frequencies for transmission.
SK Telecom Network Technology R&D Center Director Park Jin-hyo said, “The series of awards at global telecommunications and IT awards, including the GTB Awards, is recognition worldwide for SK Telecom’s innovative network technology,” and added, “We will dedicate ourselves to the development of next-generation network technology to commercialize 5G, the core infrastructure of the 4th Industrial Revolution.”

From KT 5G to various IoT technologies, you can find them at WIS 2017
KT는 24일부터 27일까지 나흘간 코엑스(COEX)에서 열리는 국내 최대 정보통신박람회 ‘월드IT쇼 2017(이하 WIS 2017)’에 참가해 ‘미리 보는 평창 5G’ 주제로 전시관을 선보인다. KT는 이번 전시에서 ▲5G 네트워크 존(5G Network Zone) ▲융합 서비스 존(Convergence Service Zone) 등 총 2개 존으로 전시관을 구성했다. 전시관 입구에는 ‘5G 네트워크’ 존을 구성하고 KT 무선가입자들을 위한 스마트폰 배터리 소모 절감 기술인 C-DRX(Connected mode Discontinuous Reception)를 배치했다. KT 무선가입자들은 C-DRX를 통해 스마트폰 배터리 이용시간이 최대 45% 증대되는 효과를 누릴 수 있다. C-DRX는 데이터 사용 시 항상 연결 상태가 되어 배터리를 소모하던 기존의 방식을 개선해, 송수신이 없을 때는 통신 기능을 꺼 둠으로써 배터리 소모를 절감하는 방식이다. 전시장 내에서 관람객은 홀로렌즈의 MR을 통해 상세 설명을 들으며 KT 무선 가입자 전체가 1초당 절감하는 전력을 활용한 수천 개의 LED 전구로 눈 내리는 겨울을 형상화한 미디어 파사드를 감상할 수 있다. 미디어 파사드를 통과하면 5G 기술을 만나볼 수 있다. 평창 5G 규격 기반의 속도, 커버리지, 장비를 소개하며 부스 중앙의 디오라마를 통해 5G 기술에 대한 증강현실(AR) 설명도 함께 제공한다. ‘융합 서비스’ 존 전면에는 관람객들이 KT의 5G 서비스를 다양한 동계 스포츠를 즐기며 실감나게 체험할 수 있는 VR 기구를 갖췄다. 루지와 알파인 스키, 봅슬레이, 피겨스케이팅 등 다양한 VR 기구들을 통해 관람객들이 5G 서비스를 체험할 수 있다.
