KT Becomes Chair of GSMA 5G Adoption Project Leading Commercialization
Published2017.07.21 12:13KT announced that Dr. Kim Ha-sung of the KT Convergence Technology Institute has been appointed as the chairman of the '5G Introduction' project, newly established under the Future Networks Group of the GSMA (Global Mobile Communications Association), the world's largest mobile telecommunications operator alliance.
The newly established '5G Introduction' project involves not only the three domestic mobile carriers but also 15 global telecommunications companies including NTT Docomo, Deutsche Telekom, China Telecom, and Sprint, as well as global manufacturers such as Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei, and Qualcomm.
In this project, we plan to take the lead in discussions for the early commercialization of 5G by establishing a strategic direction and evolution roadmap for 5G ahead of the global commercial introduction, and publishing a report at MWC 2018 next year.
Ha-Sung Kim, Chairman of the GSMA '5G Adoption' project, stated, "It is an honor to serve as the Chairman of the 5G Adoption project, and I will work together with global telecommunications companies to devise a plan for the commercial adoption of 5G and lay the foundation for the world's first 5G commercialization."
Jeon Hong-beom, Head of KT Infrastructure Research Institute and GSMA's Senior Technical Committee Member, stated, "Since the world's first early 5G commercialization in 2019 cannot be achieved by the power of individual companies or nations alone, the GSMA's role in facilitating 5G cooperation within the global mobile ecosystem is becoming increasingly important," and“As the chair company of the GSMA’s 5G adoption project leading 5G commercialization, KT will lead discussions on the early adoption of 5G on the global stage,” said KT.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kim Ha-sung of KT has led global 5G network and business cooperation while serving as the Chair of the GSMA 4G Evolution and 5G Task Force for two years since March 2015, and KT has been taking the lead in the global expansion of 5G by actively hosting the unveiling of the 'Pyeongchang 5G Standard,' ITU-T IMT-2020 Focus Group meetings, NGMN 5G technical meetings, and GSMA 5G workshops since last year.

KT to Support Telecommunications and ICT Development in Central and South America
KT announced that it has signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) at CABEI's Costa Rica branch. CABEI is a representative multilateral development bank established in 1960 to promote balanced development and economic integration in the Central American region. Currently, it has 14 member countries from Central and South America, including Guatemala, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, and Colombia, and supports investment projects for public and private programs in infrastructure and energy sectors. Accordingly, the strategic partnership between KT and CABEI is expected to contribute to activating telecommunications and ICT field projects in the Central and South American region.

KT Enters Intensive Monitoring System for Telecommunications Services During Summer Vacation Season
KT announced that it is preparing special measures to provide stable communication services for the full-scale summer vacation season, and will enter an intensive monitoring system from the 21st through August 31st. KT has designated a total of 796 major vacation destinations nationwide as "intensive monitoring areas," including Busan's Haeundae and Pohang's Guryongpo, which opened in June, as well as Gyeongpo-dae in Gangwon Province and Jeongdongjin. The company will conduct 24-hour surveillance of approximately 3,700 LTE base stations and approximately 1,250 3G base stations constructed in these areas, while maintaining an emergency recovery system in preparation for contingencies. In order for customers to use communication services without inconvenience at vacation destinations nationwide during the summer vacation period, KT has expanded the intensive monitoring areas by approximately 180 locations compared to last year, and has also increased the number of intensive monitoring base stations by approximately 1.6 times compared to last year.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
유럽특허청(EPO)의 ‘기술 대시보드 2025’에 따르면 지난해 유럽 특허 출원은 20만1974건으로 처음 20만건을 넘었다. 한국 기업과 발명가의 출원은 1만4355건으로 전년보다 9.5% 증가해 국가별 5위를 유지했다. 배터리와 디지털 통신, 반도체가 증가세를 이끌었고, 삼성은 2년 연속 EPO 최대 출원 기업, LG는 3위에 올랐다. 서울·수원·용인 등 국내 주요 도시의 존재감도 확인됐다. 한국의 유럽 특허 전략이 개별 기술을 넘어 산업 전반으로 확장되고 있다는 점도 드러났다.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
