Successful realization of 5G through domestic ICT technology
Video transmission of all Winter Olympics market conditions via 5G, integrated with KT pilot network

KT announced on the 29th that it held a briefing session on the completion of preparations for the PyeongChang 5G pilot network at the PyeongChang 5G Center located at the PyeongChang Alpensia Ski Jump Center on the 27th, together with Samsung Electronics and the Organizing Committee of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, and that all preparations to showcase the world's first 5G pilot service have been completed.

This is expected to serve as a starting point for strengthening the domestic 5G ICT technology industry, which is one of the goals of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Currently, KT plans to provide all network infrastructure, including the competition communication network and broadcasting relay network, through the 5G network.

At the briefing on this day, KT announced that following the completion of the competition communication network and broadcast relay network last June, the construction of the 5G pilot network for the 5G pilot service to be showcased in PyeongChang in 2018 was completed on the 27th, and that all network infrastructure for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics has been established.

In particular, KT showcased a 5G service demonstration at the Pyeongchang 5G Center that transmits large-capacity video by linking its completed 5G pilot network with Samsung Electronics' 5G terminal compliant with the Pyeongchang 5G standard.

In addition, key executives from the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games Organizing Committee, KT, and Samsung Electronics inspected the 5G pilot network established at the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games opening and closing ceremony venues, major stadiums, and autonomous driving courses, and confirmed that speeds of over 3.2Gbps were achieved.
Over the next 100 days leading up to the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, KT plans to focus on optimizing the network infrastructure for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and operate the Olympic command center to provide the Olympic communication network.

KT Network Division Head Oh Sung-mok stated, “KT has completed the construction of the Pyeongchang 5G network infrastructure and the interoperability of networks, terminals, and services, and has finished all preparations to showcase KT’s 5G in Pyeongchang,” adding, “Over the remaining period, we will provide a successful world-first 5G pilot service through network optimization and safe operation.”

Oh Sang-jin, Director of the Information and Communications Bureau of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, said, “As the Organizing Committee and many others are making thorough preparations to host a world-class ICT Olympics, we expect that our efforts will bear fruit through this PyeongChang Olympics,” adding, “We will do our best to work together with Olympic partners such as KT and Samsung to ensure that the passion of PyeongChang is effectively conveyed not only to Olympic visitors but also to people around the world.”
