5G Drone Broadcasting Service, 5G VR Game 'Special Force VR' Receives Favorable Reviews

KT solidified its 5G leadership through world-class ICT technology at the Mobile World Congress 2018 (MWC 2018).

MWC 2018 provided an opportunity for people around the world to experience the 5G-based services that KT has prepared and to learn about the process. Under the theme "Experience the World's First 5G, KT," KT showcased various technologies that allow visitors to get a preview of the upcoming 5G era.

In particular, the '5G Broadcast Relay Service' attracted the attention of many visitors by demonstrating 5G broadcast relay that synthesizes and transmits video captured by multiple drones in real time. It was evaluated as having shown the characteristics of 5G—ultra-high speed, ultra-low latency, and ultra-connectivity—at a glance.

'Special Force VR: UNIVERSAL WAR,' which attracted the attention of many visitors, utilized KT's proprietary wireless VR transmission technology, VR Walk-through, to run game content on a remote server and allow users to enjoy the game on a lightweight mobile phone-based HMD. In addition, KT has drastically reduced the dizziness that was pointed out as a problem in VR games through its proprietary Anti-Juddering technology.

In addition, at the KT exhibition booth, they showcased 'Blockchain,' which allows data to be registered, viewed, and deleted by introducing Mini-chain technology that creates multiple chains; 'GiGA drive,' a next-generation IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) dedicated platform for the 5G-based autonomous driving era; and 'GiGAeyes,' Korea's first intelligent video security platform.

King Felipe VI of Spain visited the KT MWC exhibition hall again this time, and the Director General of GSMA, Minister of Science and ICT Yoo Young-min, and Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission Lee Hyo-sung also visited the hall and experienced the services.

5G pilot service know-how and commercialization plans attract significant interest

KT participated in the NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Network) Press & Industry Briefing, one of the major events at MWC 2018 held in Barcelona, Spain, and announced the direction of 5G development and KT's 5G readiness status.

Board members, global ICT experts, and analysts present at the event showed keen interest in 5G pilot service know-how and KT's 5G commercialization plans. KT demonstrated the know-how and confidence derived from its pilot service experience even in response to detailed questions regarding coverage and in-building quality.

Prior to this, at the GSMA Strategy Group (SG) held on the 23rd and 24th (local time), KT presented its 5G technology and the achievements of the 5G Trial Services, which were unveiled in February 2018, to Chief Strategy Officers (CSOs) of global telecommunications companies. At the event, KT garnered the understanding of telecommunications operators worldwide by introducing the preparation process over the past three years since declaring its 5G vision at MWC 2015, as well as application cases of the 5G Trial Services.

During the MWC 2018 keynote speech, GSMA Director General Mats Granryd spoke on the theme "Creating a Better Service Provider" and praised the 5G pilot service that KT unveiled in Korea for the first time in the world. He noted, "I was able to experience the world's first 5th generation mobile communication pilot service during my recent visit to Pyeongchang, Korea," adding, "I felt as if I were actually inside the game, thanks to the time-slice technology created by cameras installed throughout the stadium and the ability to check the game situation in real time via tablets."

At the 23rd MWC Global Mobile Awards (GLOMO), KT’s digital healthcare solution and platform won the ‘Best Mobile Innovation for Health’ award. KT is fostering the digital healthcare business as one of its future growth businesses and is pursuing a global business to establish digital healthcare solutions and platforms (“m-Hospital”) in six countries, including Kazakhstan, Russia, the Philippines, and Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, during MWC 2018, KT strengthened its cooperation framework by meeting with high-ranking officials from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the government of Benin to expand its global business. The company discussed cooperation plans for building e-government with the African Development Bank, which plays a key role in building infrastructure in Africa, and held meetings and partnerships with key figures from African governments.

Aurelie Adam-Soule, Minister of Digital Economy and Communications of the Benin government, who gave a presentation on the topic of “Building Regulatory Skills to Encourage Innovation” at MWC 2018, said, “I am well aware of KT’s contributions to the development of Korea’s digital economy, and I look forward to transferring this experience and know-how to Benin.”

Excellent small and medium-sized enterprises and partner companies also participated in the exhibition at MWC 2018 alongside KT. The exhibits attracted attention, including Snatcher AI's 5G broadcast relay service placed at the front of the exhibition hall, FRTek's 5G DAS, a 5G service network application device, MAXST and VIRNECT's remote support AR video communication service using smart devices, and IRISYS's iris/face recognition solution applicable to various security services.
