Dell EMC supplied its data protection solution 'Avamar' for the backup service of NHN Entertainment's integrated cloud service 'TOAST'.

NHN Entertainment has expanded its business into Backup as a Service, which securely protects the information of cloud customers more economically and efficiently, based on Dell EMC Avamar, a source-based deduplication solution.

NHN Entertainment’s integrated cloud service, TOAST, is a public cloud that fuses the company’s large-scale IT operations experience, service know-how, and open source technology to provide a flexible cloud infrastructure based on OpenStack. TOAST offers a variety of services, including Infrastructure as a Service (IIaaS) such as virtual server compute modules, block storage, and NAS (file storage), as well as analytics and game development platforms. NHN Entertainment adopted Dell EMC’s Avamar to securely protect data generated by VMs for customers using VM services and to provide Backup as a Service in response to the ever-growing backup needs of enterprises.

Avamar, adopted by NHN Entertainment, is a representative deduplication data protection solution from Dell EMC, which holds an overwhelming market share of more than ^half in the backup appliance industry. Avamar removes duplicate data directly from the source on the operating server, drastically reducing the size of backup data by up to 1/300th, thereby significantly reducing backup time, network bandwidth, and costs. Characterized by high availability, reliability, and high speed, it is even more effective in virtualization environments where data explodes in real time.

By implementing Avamar, you can reduce maximum data movement by 99%, backup storage by 95%, client NIC usage by 95%, and backup time by 90%. Featuring a document-level search engine and multilingual support, Avamar provides non-disruptive backup and self-service recovery for the entire IT environment, ranging from the network edge (desktops and laptops) to the core (data center).

NHN Entertainment is now able to provide additional backup services to compute customers and offer data protection services for their critical data through a backup infrastructure built on Avamar. Powered by Avamar's source-based deduplication capabilities, NHN Entertainment TOAST's new backup service delivers high reliability and stability optimized for network-efficient virtualization environments.

In addition to non-disruptive backups, the service performs only incremental backups after the initial full backup, reducing backup times and efficiently managing capacity. Security is also excellent as backup data is transmitted in encrypted form. It supports Linux and Windows operating systems, and users can easily register custom backup policies via the web to freely set backup cycles and times, as well as view backup history. The service is based on a monthly subscription fee, with additional charges applied based on storage capacity or the number of servers. Meanwhile, NHN Entertainment is considering various business expansion strategies to leverage this newly established backup infrastructure, such as providing big data analysis services based on customer backup data or adding long-term backup data retention services.
