Launch of 'Next-Generation Battery Backup Solution', Industry's First 12kW Support

To prevent power outages and data loss risks in AI data centers, Infineon Technologies has strengthened its position in AI power supply by achieving up to 400% higher power density compared to the industry average.

Infineon recently announced that it has published a roadmap for its next-generation battery backup unit (BBU) solutions.

The new BBU solution offers a range of power options from 4 kW to an industry-first 12 kW, supporting high-efficiency, high-reliability, and scalable power conversion for AI server racks.

This technology is expected to strengthen the company's leading position in AI power supply technology by achieving up to 400% higher power density compared to the industry average.

BBUs play a key role in protecting sensitive AI hardware from power spikes, surges, and other power abnormalities, and providing stable power to data center equipment.

“Uninterrupted power supply to AI systems is critical to maintaining smooth operation and continuity,” said Adam White, President of Infineon’s Power and Sensor Systems business unit, emphasizing that the BBU can meet the diverse power requirements of AI servers with its excellent performance and efficiency.

In addition, Infineon has silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC), gallium nitride (announced that it will set a new standard for power supply of AI data centers by utilizing GaN materials.

Downtime or system failures in AI data centers can be costly to businesses.

According to an ITIC survey, 41% of companies lose between $1 million and $5 million per hour of downtime, and one of the main causes is power component quality issues.

To address this, Infineon introduced Partial Power Converter (PPC) technology to battery backup devices to improve performance and reliability.

The 5.5 kW BBU combines Si and GaN technologies to deliver ultra-high efficiency and high power density, while the 12 kW system leverages Infineon’s PSOC™ microcontrollers and OptiMOS™ and EiceDRIVER™ technologies to deliver unparalleled flexibility and performance.

In particular, the modular design that connects multiple power converter cards in parallel makes it easy to expand and maintain, and the system continues to operate at a reduced capacity even in the event of a failure, maintaining high reliability.

Infineon is developing a full system demo for a battery backup solution that will demonstrate the benefits of PPC technology in real-world applications and open new paths for next-generation AI data centers.
