Samsung Electronics is participating in an open-source software (SW) development project to build and expand an advanced semiconductor ecosystem.

Samsung Electronics announced on May 31 that it will serve as a member of the board of directors of the open source software development project 'RISE (RISC-V Software Ecosystem, RISE),' launched by the open source non-profit organization Linux Foundation.

RISE is an organization launched to develop software utilizing RISC-V (RISC Five), an open source semiconductor design asset (IP, Intellectual Property).

Global IT and semiconductor companies, including Samsung Electronics, Google, Intel, Nvidia, and Qualcomm, are participating.

Companies participating in this RISE project, including Samsung Electronics, plan to jointly develop software based on RISC-V.

Because RISC-V is not owned by any specific company, any company that develops software utilizing it can use it to design semiconductors for free, which is expected to contribute significantly to the expansion of the related ecosystem.

In particular, it is expected to be utilized in various fields such as mobile, home appliances, data centers, and automotive applications in the future, as it makes it easier to implement applications or services that operate on RISC-V-based chipsets and reduces the resources required for development and maintenance.is expected.

“For RISC-V to be commercialized, it is important to secure software that has performance, security, reliability, and commerciality,” said Amber Huffman, a Google senior research scientist and chair of the RISE project. “We will expand the RISC-V ecosystem by securing verified software through RISE.”

“We will participate in the RISE project and collaborate with other companies to build a sustainable RISC-V-based open source software ecosystem,” said Park Soo-hong, head of the Open Source Group at Samsung Research and a member of the Linux Foundation board of directors.

Meanwhile, 13 companies, including Samsung Electronics, Google, Intel, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Red Hat, Mediatek, Andes, Imagination, Rivos, SiFive, Ventana, and T-Head, are participating in the RISE operating board of directors.
