TI Acquires Silicon Labs… What Should EFR32 Designers Check Now?
Texas Instruments (TI) has agreed to acquire Silicon Labs for approximately $7.5 billion. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027. Shortly after the announcement, Silicon Labs sent an email to customers emphasizing no near-term changes, stating that "product roadmap … remain unchanged" and "business as usual." For developers currently using wireless MCUs such as the EFR32 and BG series, the most critical aspects are the long-term supply policy and maintenance of the roadmap. While the official position is that there will be no changes to existing product lines and support systems, the mid-to-long-term strategy following the completion of the acquisition may be detailed through additional announcements. Key points to observe include whether Simplicity Studio and Gecko SDK, the development environments, will be maintained, as well as their relationship with TI's Code Composer Studio. Meanwhile, there is also a suggestion that if TI's power management and analog capabilities are combined with Silicon Labs' low-power wireless technology, the IoT market could accelerate its shift from individual component competition toward integrated platform-centric competition.
