High-Efficiency Industrial Drives: Power Semiconductors Change Efficiency Limits

Through this presentation, Research Fellow Kim Yi-gyu stated that industrial drives are no longer simply motor driving devices but are evolving into core power systems that must simultaneously satisfy energy efficiency, digitalization, security, and reliability. In particular, Infineon is emerging as a key axis of low-loss, high-frequency, high-integration power solutions by providing major semiconductor lineups that constitute industrial drives, ranging from discrete components, IPMs, power modules, gate drivers, sensors, MCUs, memory, to security solutions.

[Special Report] Robot Design Overcomes 'Physical SOC' Limitations: Dabo Executive Vice President Yong-gyu Cho Reveals Infineon's Robotics Systems Philosophy
Jo Yong-gyou, Executive Director at DABO, emphasized a design philosophy centered on system-level approaches rather than individual components through a robotics webinar co-hosted with Infineon Technologies. Executive Director Jo diagnosed that "humanoids must simultaneously control dozens of joint motors, making system-level approaches essential." The core solution, the P4C3 MCU, is mounted on each joint in an ultra-compact form factor to perform high-speed computation and precision control. CoolGaN™, a next-generation power semiconductor, reduces losses by up to 60% compared to conventional silicon MOSFETs. This enables a 40% reduction in motor driver size and eliminates the need for heat sinks, dramatically reducing the robot's weight and volume. Executive Director Jo defined Infineon's SOC (System on Chip) concept as "a design philosophy that organically integrates an optimal semiconductor ecosystem rather than a single chip," and emphasized that developers can shorten POC and time-to-market through validated reference designs. Additionally, he presented a strategy that combines integrated sensor solutions such as radar and ToF with quantum-resistant security technology to simultaneously secure both the robot's cognitive capabilities and safety.

The End of the Era of Classification by Voltage and Capacitance… The Calculation for Selecting Industrial Drive Components
The selection criteria for power semiconductors in industrial drives are shifting. Unlike the past when devices were determined solely by voltage and capacity, the influx of wide bandgap (WBG) devices such as SiC and GaN above silicon IGBTs has made it a complex choice where price, size, switching characteristics, and reliability must be weighed together at the same power output. Kim Yi-kyoo, research fellow at Davoco Corporation, notes that the territories of SiC and GaN are "intermingled," and predicts that SiC will eventually replace megawatt-class IGBTs. Efficiency varies in the system combining drive, motor, and load rather than the motor alone, and demand for humanoids and robots powered by batteries is driving adoption of high-efficiency, lightweight WBG devices. Infineon responds with a portfolio encompassing power, sensors, control, and security, along with a 22kW reference design, while Davoco packages this into solutions for Korean customers. However, the shortage of power electronics personnel to keep pace with this transition remains a challenge for the Korean market.
