KT Ready for Commercialization of Technology to Improve LTE Download Speeds

Improve LTE download speed by more than 30% compared to the existing
KT announced on the 12th that it has completed preparations for commercialization, including testing 'Downlink 256QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation)' technology to improve LTE download speeds at commercial network base stations so that the service can be used as soon as terminals are released.
Downlink 256QAM is a technology that improves LTE download speeds by more than 30% compared to existing speeds by improving the frequency modulation/demodulation method.
KT applied 256QAM technology to LTE base stations and succeeded in demonstrating a download speed of 390Mbps in a commercial network environment using a smartphone scheduled for release.
Along with this, KT has also completed commercial network testing of technologies to improve upload speeds, such as 'Uplink CA', which combines two frequency bands for uplink transmission; 'Uplink 64QAM', which improves transmission speeds within the same frequency band by improving modulation/demodulation methods; and 'MC-PUSCH', which utilizes non-consecutive bands within the same frequency band simultaneously.
Upload speeds can be improved by 1.5 times through an upgrade from the existing 16QAM to 64QAM, 1.5 times through the application of MC-PUSCH technology, and 2 times through the application of uplink CA, and if all three technologies are applied simultaneously, upload speeds up to 4 times faster than the existing ones can be used.
Kim Young-sik, Senior Vice President of KT's Field Technical Support Group, said, “To view ultra-high definition, large-capacity content. “We plan to develop and apply continuous LTE evolution technologies so that users can enjoy it quickly and conveniently,” he said, adding, “We will lead the global telecommunications market and 5G technology through our advanced technology.”
Meanwhile, smartphones supporting downlink 256QAM and uplink CA are expected to be released within the first quarter of this year.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.

ETRI Develops 200Gbps Photodetector… Initiates Localization of Optical Receivers for AI Data Centers
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has developed a photodetector device that processes optical signals of approximately 200Gbps per channel for the first time in Korea. This device is a component that converts optical signals into electrical signals and determines the reception performance of AI data centers and 5G/6G communication networks. ETRI achieved bandwidth of 70GHz or higher and optical responsivity of 0.75A/W or higher, and integrated an indium phosphide lens on the rear of the chip to enhance optical reception efficiency and alignment convenience. The technology was presented at OECC 2025 and was recently published in the international academic journal 'Optics Express'.
