The meeting was held with the participation of 16 ITU member companies representing Korea, China, and Japan in the telecommunications, equipment, and institutional sectors.
Adoption of a Declaration Establishing Requirements for Korea, China, and Japan for International Standardization of 5G, IoT, and Open Source

KT (Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu) announced on the 21st that it held the '2nd ITU Korea-China-Japan CTO Advisory Meeting' at the KT Umeon-dong Research and Development Center with CTOs (Chief Technology Officers) of major telecommunications equipment operators and research institutions from Korea, China, and Japan belonging to the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), the world's leading international organization for telecommunications, to secure leadership in 5G international standardization and develop next-generation IoT technology.

At this second meeting, KT's Head of the Convergence Technology Institute, Lee Dong-myeon, Director General of Standardization at the ITU, Lee Jae-seop, CTOs from major telecommunications operators such as NTT, KDDI, SKT, and LGU+, as well as equipment manufacturers such as Samsung, NEC, Huawei, and Fujitsu, participated and held a meeting on three topics: "Network 2020 in Support of 5G (IMT 2020)," "IoT," and "Open Source."

At the meeting, a declaration establishing standard requirements in key areas for the international standardization of '5G', 'IoT', and 'open source' was adopted, and it is reported that the ITU will finalize future standardization directions based on this declaration. KT plans to reflect Korea's position in this standardization process while strengthening its 5G standardization leadership.

The CTOs attending the meeting agreed to actively cooperate through this second meeting so that the telecommunications industries of Korea, China, and Japan can lead the international standardization of 5G, IoT, and open source, just as the first meeting last year provided an opportunity to expand the influence of the telecommunications industries of Korea, China, and Japan on 5G international standards.

Meanwhile, the 'ITU Korea-China-Japan CTO Advisory Meeting' held its first meeting at KT's R&D Center in Umeon-dong last April. Following KT's request at this meeting to promptly begin 5G standardization, the ITU established the IMT-2020 Focus Group and began developing core standards. At this second meeting as well, KT emphasized rapid standardization cooperation with other industries, as well as IoT where 5G will be applied first, thereby elevating the standardization discussions to the next level.

“Going forward, 5G will not merely remain a technological evolution of mobile communication alone, but will become a core infrastructure for next-generation telecommunications industries such as IoT based on an open-source ecosystem,” said Lee Dong-myeon, Head of KT’s Convergence Technology Institute. “Through standardization activities at the ITU, KT will lead the development of the telecommunications industry not only in Korea but also in Korea, China, Japan, and even the global sector.”
