KT Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu announced his ambition to commercialize the next-generation mobile communications network, 5G, in 2019 in front of global telecommunications operators.

KT announced that Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu gave a keynote speech on the topic of ‘New World Beyond 5G’ at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 held in Barcelona, Spain.



Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu outlined KT's efforts to showcase 5G pilot services at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. He stated that collaboration with global partners resulted in the release of the "PyeongChang 5G" standard last year, and that this was the foundation for the successful "5G First Call."

In 2016, KT conducted seven tests and demonstrations of 5G services, including a joint demonstration with Ericsson of 5G transmission technology at 25 Gbps in a wireless environment. Furthermore, KT holds or has applied for approximately 90 patents related to 5G.

In this keynote speech, Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu presented how 5G will create a new world.

Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu predicted that in the 5G era, networks, IoE, big data, and artificial intelligence will evolve into an 'Intelligent Network' that interconnects.

Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu predicted that 5G will be a force that will change the world through intelligent networks. To explain this, we presented the commercialized energy management platform 'KT-MEG' and 'Smart Quarantine' based on roaming information.

KT-MEG is a solution that reduces energy costs based on big data such as climate information, indoor temperature, gas, electricity, and energy usage patterns.

Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu explained that by applying KT-MEG to 18 multi-use facilities in Korea, including medical facilities, hotels, and sports centers, last year, they were able to reduce energy costs by an average of 61%.


KT Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu said, “5G will be a force that changes the world through an intelligent network that combines solutions such as location, security, and control with cutting-edge ICT technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence.” He added, “In order for 5G-based intelligent networks to become the key to solving challenges facing humanity, such as climate change and the spread of infectious diseases, active discussion and continued cooperation among telecommunications operators around the world are necessary.”
